Newport & Maysville Rotary Fight Polio

Newport Rotary and Maysville Rotary held a joint meeting in Maysville on Tuesday evening to participate in a global fundraising effort for Polio Eradication. Suzanne Rea of Australia, Founder of The World's Greatest Meal to Help End Polio was the guest speaker. By the end of the evening, less than 15 Rotarians in two small, rural Eastern North Carolina Rotary clubs had combined to fund over $1,500 for Polio Eradication efforts!

Rea's message, that any Rotarian with a passion can make a difference with global impact, resonated with the participants in the room. Over $500 in personal and club contributions were raised, and those funds were then matched by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a 2 for 1 Match. The result, impact equates to over 1,000 doses of polio vaccine in the fight against Polio.

Thanks to PDG Nancy Barbee for arranging for the fantastic speaker. Newport Rotarians attending were Pres. Joe Garner, PDG Bevin Wall, Pam Wall, Rick Moreau, Anita Moreau and Rotary prospective member Sue Hogan. We had run there and on the ride up and back!

Joint Meeting: World's Greatest Meal to End Polio Founder to Speak

Rtn. Susanne Rea
Newport Rotary will hold a joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Maysville on Tuesday Nov. 11 at 5:30pm. Maysville Rotary will host a Cookies and Coffee "meal" in honor of the eradication of Polio in the Maysville Elementary School gym. Special guest will be the founder of The World's Greatest Meal to Help End Polio, Susanne Rea, from Australia.

Susanne, a Polio survivor, and Mukesh Malholtra from England wanted to do something to help raise money for Polio, Rotary's number 1 priority. They came up with this idea and started a social media campaign. Since that time, it has gone viral and has spread all over the world. The Gates Foundation matches every dollar Rotarians raise 2-1 so together with this match, WGM has raised almost $2 million. Newport Rotarians will make a donation, and, of course, individuals at the event may also.

Newport Rotarians will carpool from the Newport Rotary Building leaving at 4pm on Tuesday. Mondays meeting (Nov 10) is cancelled.

Serious as a Heart Attack: Lookout for these Symptoms!

Dr. Bill Walker
Dr. William T. "Bill" Walker, Jr. of Down East Medical Associates, Morehead City, also a Past District Governor of Rotary, will address Newport Rotary during the October 6 regular meeting. His program will be on spotting Heart Attack symptoms and what to do in case of such an emergency.

Dr. Walker graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1979. Specializing in the field of Internal Medicine, he is prepared to provide care to adult patients suffering from a wide range of illnesses and diseases, ranging from the very common to the very rare. Dr. Walker is also trained in general medicine, and is capable of treating patients for diseases that may have overlapping symptoms or complications.

Update from Program: Heart Attack RISKS are: family history, being male, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure 150/90 or greater for 10 years, high cholesterol greater than 200. SYMPTOMS are: pressure – like an elephant sitting on your chest after exertion, shortness of breath, don’t feel well, sweating profusely, nauseous. BEST PREVENTION is exercise. Walking is as effective as running or jogging and you need to do it for at least 20 min straight, every other day. Riding a bicycle is not very effective.

Youth Leadership Event Highlighted

Phil Panzarella
District RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Chair Phil Panzarella of Morehead City was the speaker at Newport Rotary on September 15, 2014.

RYLA is a leadership development program that is organized at the club, district, or multidistrict level. The format of your event depends on what you hope to accomplish, your resources, and your audience – it could be a one-day seminar, a three-day retreat, or a weeklong camp.

While participants can be any age, most events focus on secondary school students, university students, or young adults. You can use RYLA to engage at-risk youth, motivate Interact or Rotaract club officers, reconnect with Rotary alumni, or mentor young professionals to become responsible leaders.

The club heard the history of RYLA and a received a thumbnail sketch of what they do at the event. Recommendations were made regarding selecting suitable candidates and what the nominating Rotarian's role is in the process.

Lifesaving Food Sent to Dominican Republic

Newport Rotary supported an area-wide Stop Hunger Now food packaging program this Summer during Rotary Night with the Marlins (College All-Star Baseball). Pres. Joe & Lena Garner participated. Assistant Governor Bob Melone of Beaufort advises that the packaged food has been shipped to the Dominican Republic in a container totaling 125,064 meals and donated goods from the SHN Eastern North Carolina warehouse. Along with the meals the shipment is carrying children's antibiotics and vitamins! There is also insect repellent that will help fight mosquito borne illness called Chikungunya. Chikungugya is characterized by fever and joint pains. The medicines and the meals will be received by their in-country partner,Citihope.

With 42% of the population below the poverty line, food shortage is prevalent throughout the Dominican Republic. CitiHope provides food and other resources to schools, orphanages and other needy people and takes an active role in the distribution and monitoring. CitiHope supports sustainable educational and development programs that empower locals to create strong, self-sufficient communities.

Citihope's country director in the Dominican Repbulic says, "We consider this not to be 'charity' but a real investment in humanity. The school and orphanage programs help our country so much by creating a future of responsible citizens that contribute to the improvement of our society. These children come from families that cannot supply even one meal a day for their children and don't understand the purpose of education. So the motivation comes from the food!...These SHN donations are a defining component that heals a nation, multi-dimensionally".

Newport School Landscaping Completed

Chatham Street Front Entrance
to School, with Rotary's Flower Bed
Despite being delayed by a massive rainstorm during Monday's service project at Newport Elementary School (see related story here), and a soggy end of the week, the landscaping of the front grounds of the school was completed this past weekend. Included was about 3 hours of mowing, flower planting and trimming, as it looked like the grass hadn't been mowed in weeks. A manicured and cheery entranceway to the school greeted new and returning students and parents this morning, on the first day of school. This is the impression that we want to give our community! Good work Newport Rotary!

First Day of School Project

As we have for the past several years, Newport Rotary will be sprucing up visible areas outside Newport Elementary School for the first day of school. Principal Richard Paylor and other staff have joined us in the past, and we look forward to helping our school put its best foot forward with new and returning students and parents. Rotarians will meet at the Newport Rotary Building at the regular time of 5:30pm on August 18 and will proceed to NES. Work clothes and yard tools are requested. We will primarily be spreading mulch, planting flowers, and trimming a few hedges. Amazingly, the front of the school that we heavily mulched last year still looks quite good! Harding, Marconi,-the inventor of "the wireless", J.C. Hall- founder of Hallmark Cards, Sam Walton of WalMart fame, Duke Kahanamoku- the Father of Surfing", Col. Sanders of KFC, Wilbur Wright of the Wright Brothers, Dr. Norman Vincent Peele, Boxer Manny Pacquiao, and Designer Emilio Pucci. The program concluded with a modern day summation of The Object of Rotary authored by PDG Jim Henry, a key commentator on Rotary trends, in his most recent blog article at Retention Central.
