Sylvan's Literacy Partnership with Newport Rotary

Becky Taylor, Franchisee and Owners of numerous Sylvan Learning Centers in Eastern North Carolina, and a Member of the NC State Board of Education, was the featured speaker at Newport Rotary on March 24, 2014.

She spoke about her development of the Sylvan centers in the area, her partnership with Newport Rotary in the Newport community, and several other issues of educational concern raised by the members.

We thank Becky for taking her time to be with us as speaker.

Literacy Month Program, Induction, set for March 24

Our program on Monday March 24, 2014 is Becky Taylor from Sylvan Learning Center. This is great speaker for us to have during Rotary's Literacy Month! They have just started an active program in Newport, and are meeting at our Rotary Building on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Becky purchased her first Sylvan franchise in 1987 and currently owns 5 centers in eastern NC. Becky holds a Masters Degree in Special Education with a concentration in Learning Disabilities. Her teaching experience includes ten years in the public schools where she taught exceptional students in in grades K - 12. Although she loves working with students of all ages, she especially enjoys working with middle school students. Becky also had the pleasure of teaching in the College of Education at East Carolina University for a few years before her career with Sylvan. Becky has a passion for Sylvan and has worked with thousands of Sylvan families during the past 23 years.

We also have scheduled a New Member Induction for Walmart Neighborhood Market Store Manager, Tammy Cooper. 

The meeting runs from 5:30-6:30pm, with networking from 5:15-5:30pm. Snacks are served. Guests are always welcome.

School Superintendent Talks Issues in Education

Dr. Dan Novey, Superintendent of the Carteret County School System, was the featured speaker at Newport Rotary on Monday, March 10, 2014. He is a Rotarian in the Beaufort Old Town Rotary.

Dr. Novey spoke on the issues of the "Common Core" curriculum, the 25% versus tenure issue with teacher pay, and "how we are doing" in the Carteret County Schools. During and after his 30 minute program, he was very kind to answer numerous questions relating to all of those issues. he was especially proud of how the County schools were grading out using "performance" and "accountability growth" standards.

Amanda Keller was visiting the club as a joint guest of Bevin Wall & Winston Reese. Amanda is a Financial Services Representative at First Citizens Bank in Newport.

In Health and Happiness, Jane Garner and Clara Wall were remembered.

Law Student Describes Hectic College Life & Career Choice

Julia Saikali, a second year law student at The Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University was the guest speaker at Newport Rotary on Monday, March 3, 2014. Julia gave a description of her college life, including why she changed to law school instead of a pharmacy degree. She has a little more than a year to go in law school at Campbell University in Raleigh.

She attributes her decision to pursue a law career to her mentor, Newport Rotary's resident attorney, Bevin Wall, and gave a glowing description of her time working in his office. “I would look at the clock and it was lunch time. Back to work, and the next time I looked it was 5:00." It was exciting and fast paced! Julia is the daughter of Newport Rotary Past President Maher Saikali.
