June 23 Program- Brewing Up a Good Time

The June 23, 2014 Newport Rotary program will be a "Beer-Tasting" by the proprietor of Harrika's Brew Haus, local dentist, Harry Worden. I am sure a good time will be had by all. Don't miss  it!

The regional and craft beer industry has taken off in recent years, and is making its mark in Carteret County in numerous ways. Harrika's has been on the cutting edge of this beer revolution. Beers now challenges wine in regional complexity and color. Some recent Harrika's favorites: Brooklyn Quarterly Experiment Cuvee, Terrapin Tangerine Dreamsicle, Stone Enjoy By IPA, Dogfish Festina Peche, Anderson Valley Gose in a Can, and Terrapin Maggies Peach Farmhouse. Join us as we get a glimpse into this new world of malt flavors and textures, shared with us by our friend, Harry.

Food Drive a Success

The total count of food items collected for our local food pantry during our June 11, 2014 project day at the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market is 810 pounds of food and $77.00 in cash contributions. Great going Newport Rotary!

Thanks to our partners- the St. James Methodist Church Matthew 25 Fund and the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. Click here for more on the story.

24 Year Bank Manager Retires

Winston Reese
Newport Rotary's J. Winston Reese, Jr. has retired from First Citizens Bank after a 24 years as Newport's head banker and a career with the bank that spanned 37 years.

Winston's involvement with Newport Rotary began at the same time as he came to Newport in 1990. He has faithfully served as Club Treasurer for many years, and will also step down from that position this year, although he will continue to be active in Newport Rotary.

We wish Winston (and Jean) much happiness in his retirement! Click here for a Carteret County News-Times article on his retirement from the June 11, 2014 edition.

Wal-Mart Opening Provides Food Pantry Opportunity

Newport Rotary's Steve Blizzard holds up a "Grocery List"
for the Food Drive at Newport's Wal-Mart!
Newport Rotary was named the preferred civic organization by Wal-Mart on its opening day of the Newport Wal-Mart Neighborhood Store. Rotarians took the opportunity to do a food drive from 8:00 am to 6:00pm for the local food pantry for the needy, the St. James Methodist Church Matthew 25 Fund.

Newport Rotary was positioned under the big white tent at the front door of the store, and passed out "grocery lists" for the needy. Volunteers from the Matthew 25 Fund also helped shuttle the boxes of canned and fresh items to their location. The store was opened with pomp & circumstance, bands, and speeches.

We appreciate the civic pride, 100+ jobs, and their Store Manager, Tammy Cooper - (you guessed it) a Newport Rotarian!

Newport Rotary Supports Hospice House

We are proud that this excellent facility is in our town!
Last year, Newport Rotarians came together with other Carteret County Rotarians to financially support the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House. This is fitting, since the multi-million dollar facility is located in Newport. The pledge was $100 per Rotarian over the 3 year period. Newport Rotarians who have met the full pledge challenge the remaining Newport Rotarians to do the same! So far, this includes Larry Howard, Winston Reese, Joe Garner Pam Wall and Bevin Wall. We need to support this tremendous asset in our community!

Winston Reese Retires from First Citizens Bank

We wish our good friend Winston Reese best wishes on his retirement from Newport's First Citizens Bank.

Winston is the second banker at First Citizens, since a group of Rotarians helped bring the bank to town in 1953. The late Rotarian Nathan Garner was the first Banker in Newport.

Rotarian Jason Holland will succeed Winston at the bank.
