Serious as a Heart Attack: Lookout for these Symptoms!

Dr. Bill Walker
Dr. William T. "Bill" Walker, Jr. of Down East Medical Associates, Morehead City, also a Past District Governor of Rotary, will address Newport Rotary during the October 6 regular meeting. His program will be on spotting Heart Attack symptoms and what to do in case of such an emergency.

Dr. Walker graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1979. Specializing in the field of Internal Medicine, he is prepared to provide care to adult patients suffering from a wide range of illnesses and diseases, ranging from the very common to the very rare. Dr. Walker is also trained in general medicine, and is capable of treating patients for diseases that may have overlapping symptoms or complications.

Update from Program: Heart Attack RISKS are: family history, being male, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure 150/90 or greater for 10 years, high cholesterol greater than 200. SYMPTOMS are: pressure – like an elephant sitting on your chest after exertion, shortness of breath, don’t feel well, sweating profusely, nauseous. BEST PREVENTION is exercise. Walking is as effective as running or jogging and you need to do it for at least 20 min straight, every other day. Riding a bicycle is not very effective.

Youth Leadership Event Highlighted

Phil Panzarella
District RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Chair Phil Panzarella of Morehead City was the speaker at Newport Rotary on September 15, 2014.

RYLA is a leadership development program that is organized at the club, district, or multidistrict level. The format of your event depends on what you hope to accomplish, your resources, and your audience – it could be a one-day seminar, a three-day retreat, or a weeklong camp.

While participants can be any age, most events focus on secondary school students, university students, or young adults. You can use RYLA to engage at-risk youth, motivate Interact or Rotaract club officers, reconnect with Rotary alumni, or mentor young professionals to become responsible leaders.

The club heard the history of RYLA and a received a thumbnail sketch of what they do at the event. Recommendations were made regarding selecting suitable candidates and what the nominating Rotarian's role is in the process.

Lifesaving Food Sent to Dominican Republic

Newport Rotary supported an area-wide Stop Hunger Now food packaging program this Summer during Rotary Night with the Marlins (College All-Star Baseball). Pres. Joe & Lena Garner participated. Assistant Governor Bob Melone of Beaufort advises that the packaged food has been shipped to the Dominican Republic in a container totaling 125,064 meals and donated goods from the SHN Eastern North Carolina warehouse. Along with the meals the shipment is carrying children's antibiotics and vitamins! There is also insect repellent that will help fight mosquito borne illness called Chikungunya. Chikungugya is characterized by fever and joint pains. The medicines and the meals will be received by their in-country partner,Citihope.

With 42% of the population below the poverty line, food shortage is prevalent throughout the Dominican Republic. CitiHope provides food and other resources to schools, orphanages and other needy people and takes an active role in the distribution and monitoring. CitiHope supports sustainable educational and development programs that empower locals to create strong, self-sufficient communities.

Citihope's country director in the Dominican Repbulic says, "We consider this not to be 'charity' but a real investment in humanity. The school and orphanage programs help our country so much by creating a future of responsible citizens that contribute to the improvement of our society. These children come from families that cannot supply even one meal a day for their children and don't understand the purpose of education. So the motivation comes from the food!...These SHN donations are a defining component that heals a nation, multi-dimensionally".
